Escalante Grand Staircase Monument America's newest National Monument
The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is an area of plateaus, sandstone canyon, unique rock formations and cliffs in southern Utah.
The 1.7 million acres of desert became the nation's newest national monument in September 1996. The monument extends eastward from Bryce Canyon National Park to Capitol Reef National Park, and south to the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.It borders the Dixie National Forest on the north and extends southward to the Arizona State line.
It's a good idea to acquire up to date information before venturing into the Monument's interior either on foot or by car as facilities are not avialable and weather can play a large part in obtaining access. The site is managed by the US Bureau of Land Management. Visit with BLM staff and plan your travels accordingly. The BLM information centers are located around the periphery of the Monument. BLM personnel at these centers can provide visitors with essential and detailed information.
These lands are rugged and primitive, appealing to those looking for an adventure.Plan on taking food and water to leave in your vehicle in case of washouts due to flooding. Search and rescue capabilities are very limited.
